The American Red Cross Infant and Preschool Aquatics Program (IPAP) -- Helps young children become comfortable in and around the water so they are ready to learn to swim. This program is NOT designed to teach children to become good swimmers or even survive in the water on their own. The program gives parents or guardians information and techniques to help orient their children to the water and to supervise water activities in a safe manner.
Parent/guardian accompaniment in the water is required for the infant and toddler levels, and children must be 6 months of age by June 28.
Learn to Swim Courses -- Open to children at least six years of age by December 31.
The American Red Cross Learn to Swim program teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The program consists of 7 courses:
Lap Swimming -- For the lap swimmer who wants to improve on stroke form and turning techniques.
Adult and Teen Swimming -- Individual instruction in swimming skills is offered to Livingston residents older than 13 years of age. This course is particulary attractive to older citizens. Non-swimmers, novices and experienced swimmers of all ages are welcome.
Non-swimmers -- This course is designed to teach non-swimming children 8-11 years old swimming skills and safety techniques in an environment with children their own age.
Note: Not all courses are offered at each pool at each hour. When registering for swim instruction, please be sure your child is put into the correct swimming level. If your child is registered in the wrong level, there is no guarantee that there will be space at the same time or pool. If you are unsure of which level your child should be placed, there will be staff at registration to assist you. The American Red Cross specifies minimum hours of attendance for certification in some courses.
Lifeguard Training -- Teaches participants how to respond to water emergencies at non-surf facilities. Candidates must be 15 years old by the first day of the course, and capable of passing a rigorous qualification test that is administered at the first class session. Students must also complete C.P.R. and First Aid Training before the finish of the Lifeguard Training Course. Course dates and times will be available before swim program registration. Students must attend all class sessions. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be issued an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate which is valid for three years.
Water Safety Instructor Aide -- Provides training for individuals who wish to assist Water Safety Instructors in conducting American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Courses. Individuals who are 10 years of age or older and capable of passing a swimming test are eligible to participate in the course.
Volunteer Aide Program -- The Department of Recreation and Parks invites qualified aides to participate in its Learn-To-Swim Program on weekday mornings by assisting American Red Cross instructors. Candidates for aide positions must be at least 10 years old and have a basic knowledge of swimming stroke mechanics. We request that all aides possess a Water Safety Instructor Aide Certification. The swimming aide plays an invaluable role in the township's summer swim program. In addition, a record of volunteer work with the Recreation Department may increase one's opportunity for future employment with the department.
Note: A fee will accompany all advanced certification courses to cover materials and equipment. Bring standard size notebook to all first classes.
